Tarot Summer School, 2018
Thursdays, June 21st – July 12th | 7pm – 9pm
∇ Workshop Vintage | 4011 N Williams Ave | Portland, OR 97227
What is Tarot? It’s a system of divination, yes, but more than predicting the future, the Tarot’s real power is in helping us figure out the present. Many of us are so future-obsessed, always wanting to know what’s going to happen to us, when we’ll find true love, whether this career is leading anywhere, etc. etc. etc. But the tools for actuating those desired futures are right here, in the present. The Tarot provides us with a deeply valuable portal into investigating the Now, clarifying our desires and how to get them, uncovering our bullshit and how we get in our own ways, teasing out old wounds and offering medicine for our healing. By paying attention to the present, by doing the work that calls to be done, by consciously participating in our own lives, this is how we reach those goals and dreams.
Tarot Summer School is a 4-week Tarot immersion series rooted in this present-centered model of conscious practice. Taught by Claire Burgess (me!) of The Word Witch Tarot, these conversational and interactive workshops will develop your relationship to all 78 cards from a non-patriarchal, queer-centered approach. From the Major & Minor Arcanum to reading Reversals and Spreads, this intensive will deepen your understanding of the Tarot’s capacity to uncover self-knowledge, catalyze healing, and cultivate an empowered and self-directed life.
No experience is necessary. Please bring your deck if you have one. For those who don’t, there will be a limited number of decks available for your use during the workshop. While these workshops will primarily reference Smith-Waite/Rider-Waite imagery, you should bring whatever deck most calls to you!
This 4-class series is intended to be taken as a whole, with each workshop covering a different area of the Tarot and building on the last. However, individual workshops are self-contained enough for those who feel called to register for only one or two workshops.
Individual Workshops: $45
Full Series: $140 ($40 in savings)
There are a limited number of sliding scale spots available in order to make this offering more accessible to the community. Get in touch through my contact form to inquire! I believe that money should not be a gatekeeper to gaining knowledge or developing intuition, so please don’t hesitate to reach out if you’re interested in learning more.
The Major Arcana: the Fool’s Journey
Thursday, June 21st | 7pm-9pm
In this first session in our Tarot Summer School series, we’ll introduce the history of the Tarot and its modern utility as a deeply valuable tool for developing self-knowledge and intuition. We’ll immerse ourselves in learning the Major Arcana through the three lines of the Fool’s Journey and see how we, our lives, and our growth cycles are mirrored therein. We will work with the Major Arcana’s archetypes from a non-gendered approach that strives to recognize the spectrum of “masculine” and “feminine” energies present in all souls. Participants will receive handouts and suggested homework exercises for continued exploration.
The Minor Arcana: Wands & Cups
Thursday, June 28th | 7pm-9pm
In this second session of Tarot Summer School, we’ll dive into the Minor Arcana with the suits of Wands and Cups. Wands are the suit of fire, which means passion, desire, ambition, creation—the spark of life itself. Cups are the suit of water, encompassing the realms of emotion, intuition, imagination—the deep well of the sub- and un-conscious. We’ll learn to read and connect to the cards easily through their elemental affinities and number correspondences and to value each minor suit as its own individual cycle in the larger cycle of life. We’ll look at the Court Cards not as gendered characters but as modes of being, using elemental energies to shed light on their individual gifts and personalities. Participants will receive handouts and suggested homework exercises for continued exploration.
The Minor Arcana: Swords & Pentacles
Thursday, July 5th | 7pm-9pm
In this third session of Tarot Summer School, we’ll complete our Minor Arcana journey with the suits of Swords and Pentacles. Swords are the suit of air and speak to the mental realm of thoughts, analysis, communication–the lightning storm of helpful and harmful brain chemistry that shapes our reality. Pentacles are the suit of earth and are often interpreted through the lens of finances, but they are so, so much more than money. Pentacles are the suit of the physical plane, meaning the body, sensuality, comfort, home & hearth, work, abundance–the foundation upon which we build everything else.
The Cards in Conversation: Reading Spreads & Reversals
Thursday, July 12th | 7pm-9pm
In this fourth and final session of Tarot Summer School, we’ll learn to read Tarot spreads as webs of meaning and dialogue. The cards speak to each other and to us through their colors, imagery, directionality, and number correspondences. Reading a spread is an analytical skill & an intuitive art, and we’ll work to develop both aspects. This session will also include a framework for reading Reversals. Here is where we synthesize all we’ve worked on in the last month and put it in action! After working through the mechanics of reading spreads, we’ll practice reading for ourselves and/or each other, dependent on each participant’s level of comfort, supported by the guidance of our peers and Claire Burgess. Participants will receive handouts and suggested homework exercises for continuing their Tarot journey after our time together is done.
Since seats are limited, we ask that you cancel your registration no less than one week in advance in order to allow others the opportunity to fill your spot. Your registration cannot be refunded after this point. If you have registered for the full workshop series, you must cancel more than 7 days before the first session (i.e. by June 14th) for a refund. For individual workshop registrants, you may cancel 7 days before the workshop for which you are registered for a refund.
